Student Area Guides

City Centre

The city centre is as close to the University of Manchester and MMU main campuses as Fallowfield, and only a few minutes walk from the city based university campuses like MMU’s business school. The average rent is higher, but it might be worth it for the proximity to hundreds of shops, bars, clubs and restaurants.

Fallowfield

Fallowfield is the definitive studentville. Home of most of the University of Manchester halls, student focused pubs, bars, restaurants and takeaways have sprung up to cater to demand. These tend to be pretty cheap- some of the most popular are Font and its £2 cocktails, and Queen of Hearts. Student houses tend to be small terraced houses for 3-5 tenants, and large Victorian houses for 5+ tenants. For the more active student, the leisure complex offers cheap squash courts, classes and gym membership. There is a massive Sainsbury’s for all your food and drink supplies, and also a small Tescos that’s particular useful on a Sunday afternoon when Sainsbury’s closes.

Withington

Slightly further along Wilmslow road from Fallowfield is Withington (and a branch of homes4u!). There are a smaller percentage of students here than Fallowfield, and therefore there are slightly fewer bars and student pubs. The local supermarket is the Co-op, and there are a number of fantastic value butchers and grocers. There are also a large number of charity shops for the bargain hunter. The slightly longer bus journey in the morning can be offset by the fact houses can be slightly cheaper.

Victoria Park

Victoria Park is the location closest to Manchester and MMU campus, so is perfect for those who stumble of bed 5 minutes before their lecture starts. Victoria park is also right next to Rusholme, so it’s also perfect for those partial to a curry. Housing options are mostly house-shares in large Victorian houses or in one of the halls of residences.

Levenshulme

Levenshulme is a good option for students studying at the city centre campuses of MMU and Manchester University, as well as Salford University. Connection to the city centre is through the regular Stockport Road buses, and Stockport is also easy to get to via bus or train.

Didsbury

Travel a mile South of Withington and you get to upmarket Didsbury. This is a popular area amongst professionals, so rent, bars and restaurants can all be more expensive. Buses are regular but the journey to uni in the morning can take a while, which might be hard if you like to sleep in. Didsbury is often popular with postgraduate students.

Rusholme

If you are partial to a curry, Rusholme and its famous curry mile is the place to be. It’s also good for those strapped for cash because it can be cheaper than some of the other student areas. It’s just a quick walk or bus ride to get to Manchester University or the main MMU campus, and also to the city centre.

Whalley Range

Whalley Range is a leafy area close to Chorlton, and a ten minute walk from Fallowfield. It is specifically popular with postgrad students. Houses are reasonably priced, but there aren’t many shops in the area. There are regular buses to campuses and the city centre.

Chorlton

Chorlton (short for Cholton-cum-Hardy) is similar to Didsbury with its high demand from professionals, but can be slightly cheaper. It is a very nice place to live with high quality bars, cafes and restaurants and tends to be popular with postgrads. Not on the Wilmslow Road bus route, but buses are still regular to the city centre and to the main campuses.

Hulme

The housing in Hulme consists of purpose-built student accommodation and private homes. The whole place has been recently regenerated since 1990, and hundreds of millions of pounds have been spent on the area. It has become popular in recent years because of its proximity to both the city centre and to the main campuses on Oxford Road. There is also a massive supermarket to stock up on food and drink supplies.
