Formally a derelict port Media City is now billed as a creative hub. It is home to BBC North, ITV, Coronation Street, SIS LIVE, the University of Salford, dock10 and over 250 innovative businesses.
Across from Media City is Salford Quays where you will find The Lowry Outlet Mall and Theatre.
At Ontario Basin is the Salford Watersports centre which provides a range of watersports including sailing, canoeing and kayaking. An annual Triathlon is held in Salford Quays with competitors swimming along the River Irwell.
The Lowry Outlet Mall is home to a selection of big name stores such as M&S, Gap, Yankee Candle and Cadburys. There are a number of seated restaurants, and if you are looking for fast food, there are a number of outlets in the Malls Food Hall.
At Media City for food and drink you will find Damson Restaurant, Prezzo and The Dockyard. There is also a Booths supermarket.
The Lowry Theatre is host to a full programme of drama, dance, live music shows and exhibitions. They cater for all age ranges and tastes, everything from major west end productions such as Wicked, to children’s and family shows and new productions in the Studio.
The Imperial War Museum North West is part of a family of five museums with other sites in London, Cambridge and Northern Ireland. Admission is free and they hold events throughout the year including family-friendly during school holidays.
Before the development of The Lowry and Media City there were only a handful of town houses and apartments at St Lawrence and Labrador Quays developed in the 1990’s. In recent years the area has seen several new developments such as Millennium Tower, NV buildings, City Lofts at the Quays and The Heart and Number 1 at Media City. There are more residential properties planned, mainly apartments.
There are Metrolink services to Salford Quays and Media City linking the area with Manchester City Centre. There are Bus stops nearby at Salford Quays and Trafford Park.
Salford University expanded into Media City, and there are now over 30 undergraduate and post grad courses taught from the campus. At the School of Arts and Media and Business School they also run professional short courses working alongside local businesses.
Salford Quays is positioned near the end of the Manchester Ship Canal and was formerley Manchester Docks. There is a vast expanse of water with seating along the side to rest and take in the tranquillity of the area.
