New East Manchester, Ancoats & New Islington

In 2010, the Urban Regeneration Company New East Manchester Ltd was formed with the vision to redevelop an area close to the City Centre into a thriving community.

Since then, as well as residential development there are three new shopping centres, two new health centres and seven new children’s centres.

Ancoats and New Islington borders the Northern Quarter and in recent years has been a focus for the regeneration of the City Centre. It sits between the Ashton and Rochdale Canals with New Islington Marina at the centre.

Things to do

Sports City was developed specifically for the 2002 Commonwealth Games and it is home to the Eithiad Stadium (48,000 seater home to MCFC), The National Cycling Centre, Manchester National Squash Centre, Manchester Regional Arena, Manchester Tennis and Football Centre, English Institute of Sport and Manchester Sport and Leisure Trust Head Office.

Property in the area closest to Great Ancoats Streets tends to be apartments in converted warehouses or new builds. At Eastbank there is a selection of modern two and three bedroomed townhouses.

Around Gurney Street and Hackleton Close you will find some more traditional houses, offering family housing, still within walking distance of the City Centre.

Sport city predominantly consists of apartments. However there are some modern houses situated on the development.

Getting About

The area is served by the Manchester – Ashton Metrolink line with stops at New Islington, Holt Town, Etihad and Velopark. There is a regular bus service.

Education

New Islington Free School is a primary school located on Jersey Street and is funded directly from the Department of Education.

The East Manchester Academy is a secondary and post 16 education establishment established in 2010 and located on Grey Mare Lane

Parks and recreation

The Marina at New Islington was redeveloped at a cost of over 20 millions and has a park, moorings for lease and boating facilities.
