Bonfires and firework displays in Manchester 2016

It’s that time of year again, the time we’ve all been told from an early age to ‘remember, remember the fifth of November.’ November 5th is the national day synonymous with fireworks, bonfires and celebration. But what does the day recognised for over four centuries actually commemorate, and more important where are the bonfire and firework displays in Manchester.

The origins of the day date back to a Roman Catholic activist plot from 1605. Led by a man called Robert Catesby, the radical group were disillusioned with life in England under the ruling of the Protestant king at the time, James I. The plotters, angered at not being able to practice their religion planned to blow up the Palace of Westminster during the state opening of Parliament. However it is not Robert Catesby but Guy ‘Guido’ Fawkes, the gunpowder expert of the group who is the most renowned member.

When a member of parliament was tipped off with an anonymous letter and the plot foiled, King James I declared the day a national holiday. Fast forward four hundred years and we are still gathering to light bonfires and set off fireworks marking the explosives that were never used.

So there you go history lesson over. Now we have brushed up our knowledge on the meaning of what could be construed as a night of dabbling in light pyromania, where can you go for free in Manchester to watch some of the displays on offer this weekend?
