Home ownership in the UK

Home ownership is a very prevalent topic in the news at the minute. Many people are talking about the lack of supply and growing unaffordability of housing in today’s market. We wanted to take this opportunity to plot what has happened to home ownership levels over the last 30 years.

The graph below shows the changing levels of home ownership since 1981 across different age ranges, it make for some interesting viewing!


It is with the younger generation, most likely first-time buyers, where we see the biggest drop in home ownership. In 1991, 67% of the 25 to 34 age group were homeowners, by 2011/12, this had declined to 43%. In comparision, among older generations, home ownership levels have increased during the same period.
