Manchester Pride 2017
Manchester Pride is an annual festival that will once again this year attract people from all over the world to Manchester to celebrate Manchester’s LGBT culture. Pride’s main event, the Big Weekend, is taking place in the famous Gay Village and will run from Friday August 25 to Monday August 28.
How long has pride been going?
Over the last two decades many organised events have taken place celebrating LGBT culture, marking and celebrating LGBT life in and around the city's Gay Village.
The Manchester Pride festival came into it’s own after the 2003 Manchester EuroPride event, and it has been running strong ever since.
How much are tickets?
Pride is community run and free of charge to attend. This year’s theme is ‘Class of 2017’. Where donations are welcome as always to help raise money for many of the local LGBT charities.
What to look out for this year
The chart-topping Clean Bandit is set to perform at the Manchester Pride Big Weekend this year, getting a lot of people excited.
With Manchester Pride working alongside G-A-Y they have managed to bag Clean Bandit for an exclusive UK pride performance. The Manchester Pride festival organisers have gone on to say: “It’s brilliant to have such a relevant and current group displaying their support for LGBT people around the world.”
I’m sure their appearance at The Big Weekend will be a memorable one as they put on a show to remember.
Organisers of The Big Weekend have added a little twist to the four day event as they introduce a secret door which will give access to a mystery area that will host some interesting events.
Saturday and Sunday it will host a secret silent disco that you may be able to find but getting in is another case entirely. Well according to the festivals website that is. You'll need a password that you will have to figure out on your own. Exciting!
On Monday it will be transformed into a sing-a-long cinema, where you can grab some popcorn and sing to your heart’s content. It will be featuring favourites such as Grease and The Rocky Horror Picture Show. “Ah wella wella”
Where can I donate?
Through fundraising Manchester Pride has distributed over £1.3 million to local LGBT organisations, charities and community groups in the Greater Manchester area.
Many organisations are only able to survive because of the external funding received from events such as The Pride Community fund. If you are curious to see where the funding goes and what it is used for then take a look at Manchester Pride’s charity video.
Or if you want to do one better, donate to the Pride website.
How can I get into Manchester?
An app that will quickly become your best friend is Trainline that can help you find the best deal when getting a train into Manchester. You can save upwards of 43% so it’s a good idea to have a look.
I would advise against driving into town, living here I can tell you that the journey down is nothing compared to the traffic you will face coming in and that’s where National Express coaches come into play.
