Roald Dahl's Gloriumptious Christmas Mansion - Tatton Park
On Friday 25th November, we took a trip to Tatton Park to check out their amazing Christmas Mansion decorated as Roald Dahl's Gloriumptious Christmas Mansion. The weather couldn’t have been better, clear blue skies and crisp cold air made for the perfect winters day.
Before we had even parked the car there were things to see. From the Twits’ upside down house to the glass elevator from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. We entered the Tatton Park courtyard through the purple and gold arches also taken from Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to find gorgeous Christmas decorations making it feel as though we’d stepped right into Christmas before we had even reached the Mansion.
As we approached the Mansion, there were signs lining the path with quotes from different Roald Dahl stories. My favourite was ‘If you have good thoughts they will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely’ – the Twits’.
Lights twinkled from inside of the mansions doors and we were soon greeted by a grand entry hall filled with an array of huge purple sweets, giant feathers and enormous candy canes. They really had made it feel as though we were about to enter the Wonka’s Chocolate Factory.
Each room of the mansion was taken over by one of Roald Dahls Stories. The first room we visited was set as a scene from ‘The Witches’ with a huge bubbling cauldron in the middle of the room, lit up with purple lights creating a spooky aura. This quickly changed as we entered a huge forest dinner party that took over the next room. This was a scene from Fantastic Mr. Fox. The attention to detail here was amazing; from hundreds of pine cones to subtle music and food that looked so real you could just eat it all up! A huge table was surrounded by a vast family of life-like foxes dressed in brilliant costumes from the story. Throughout the mansion, there were posters with famous quotes from different books. In this room the quote was ‘I understand what you’re saying and your comments are valuable, but I’m going to ignore your advice’ – Fantastic Mr. Fox. These quotes were definitely one of my favourite little touches around the mansion.
In one of the grand hallways of the mansion was the biggest indoor Christmas tree I’ve ever seen. Filled with lights and beautiful baubles, it left me wondering how on earth they managed to decorate the whole thing! Underneath were a tonne of presents… I mean loads! I hope my Christmas tree looks like that this year!
The next room was one of my favourites… Matilda’s Library. From the minute you walked in it was clear what story you had entered into; with walls lined from floor to ceiling with books, a Christmas tree made purely of books and a ginormous chocolate cake! There were handmade paper Christmas trees hanging from the ceiling, along with playing cards, jewelry and cutlery gleaming in the light.
The vibe was soon changed as we entered the BFG’s room where a huge model of the BFG himself was sat welcoming everyone in. Jars filled with different lights made this room feel as though you really were inside the story looking at all the dreams caught by the BFG. In this room was a woman playing the harp… a very beautiful harp as well. This really added to the dreamlike atmosphere in the room. The quote found in this room was ‘this is where all dreams is beginning’ which fitted in just perfectly.
After waving goodbye to the BFG we landed in Willy Wonka’s Chocolate factory which was lit up with magical lights surrounded by giant candy cane and moving cakes and sweets. Again, the attention to detail here was brilliant.
We soon moved on into a corridor which displayed all Roald Dahl’s book covers in a multitude of different languages showing his success and the popularity of his stories around the globe.
From this we stepped into the Mansion’s kitchen where George’s Marvelous Medicine was being made and visitors had the opportunity to make Christmas crafts. The kitchen was filled with glass jars in an array of shapes and sizes filled with sweets and chocolates and all things yummy.
Once our journey around the Mansion had come to and end we entered into a huge hall where there was an indoor Christmas market selling everything from home decorations for this festive period to cheeses and cakes. We finished up our trip with some cake and headed back home.
From originally thinking this may be an event for young children I was very surprised at how much I enjoyed it. This was definitely down to the attention to detail and effort put in by those who decorated the Mansion. Each room really did feel like you were had hopped into each of the stories. There are even some little surprises as you head around the mansion.. I’ll give you a clue… food! There was really something for everyone there and I would recommend this as a great Christmas day out for the whole family, from the little ones all the way up to the grandparents!
