Spotlight on: Canal Street

Canal Street, home to Manchester’s Gay Village is undoubtedly one of the friendliest and welcoming places on earth.

A brief history

Canal Street started its development during the completed construction of the 1804 Rochdale Canal. This allowed businesses to flourish as they began to cater for the many users of the canal itself.

From 1990 to 2000 larger bars began to open along the canal side, turning Canal Street into what we all know today as the most successful Gay Village in Europe. More popularity for the area came when several television shows made use of Canal Street and its bars, further cementing its already impressive status.

One of the most successful TV shows to feature Canal Street is Queer as Folk that follow the lives of three gay men living in the village. Following its success a North American version was made. The UK version even features familiar face Charlie Hunnam, who is most recognisable for his later role in series Sons of Anarchy and recently 2017’s King Arthur.

Getting About

As Canal Street is based right in the center of town, there are many local car parks that you can use. Most of these car parks are around a five to ten minute walk depending where you are.

If you don’t drive there are many other methods of transportation you can use. Chorlton Street bus station is located right next door from Canal Street. I don’t think you could ask for a more convenient stop than that!

Piccadilly is also home to Manchester’s main train terminus. So if you are thinking of getting the train into town, you will only be a ten minute walk away from Canal Street.

Things to do

Adding to the incredibly strong and welcoming community is an array of Fantastic restaurants, traditional bakeries and grocers as well as oriental galleries.

Canal Street, which runs along the Rochdale Canal, is lined with bars and restaurants such as  favourites Cruz 101, Club Bloom and Alter Ego that attracts huge numbers of tourists. The area is at it’s busiest during the annual Gay Pride Parade, a colourful and lively carnival which attracts thousands every year.
