Northern Qurter

The Northern Quarter has a reputation of being the most fashionable and bohemian area in the City Centre. It is unique in its creativity- the home of small creative companies, galleries, independent shops and the location for festivals. It is made colourful with street art daubed on walls and shutters, and sculptures on many corners.

Things to do

The Northern Quarter is home to everything from tiki bars to pool halls and even a ping pong club at Twenty Twenty Two on Lever Street. The area has held street parties in the summer with live music, food and stalls.

Anyone who has grown in up Manchester will have visited Affleck's Palace at some point. It is an alternative department store selling everything from vintage clothing to cyber club gear, accessories, henna tattoos and piercings.

A stalwart of the area is Matt and Phreds jazz club, a no nonsense music venue just off Stephenson Square where you can be treated to blues, jazz and funk.

There is a fantastic variety of cuisine available in the Northern Quarters many resturants. Head into Solita on Turner Street and see if you can finish one of their huge Manchester Burgers. Ning on Oldham Street serves up authentic Malaysian food at a reasonable price and there is a cookery school attached. Sweet Mandarin is an award winning Chinese restaurant run by Lisa and Helen Tse. You may remember the sisters from their appearance on Ramsays Kitchen Nightmare! They were both awarded MBE’s in the 2014 New Years Honours list.

Residential developments in the area consist of apartments, and demand is high. There are some beautiful conversion in the area with a wealth of original features such as high ceilings and exposed brickwork. More modern blocks have been developed in such a way as to not over power the feel of the area which is popular with all ages and renters and owner occupiers.

Getting About

Piccadilly Train Station is a short walk from the Northern Quarter and from the station you can also access the Metrolink. The area is also served by the free city centre Shuttle Bus.
