Southern Gateway

Where Wilmslow Road becomes Oxford Road, the Southern Gateway is the entrance to the city centre. It is home to Manchester Royal Infirmary and Manchester Children’s Hospital and St Mary’s. The University of Manchester, Manchester Metropolitan University and the Royal Northern College of Music are also in the area.

Things to do

On the University of Manchester Campus is the Manchester Museum where collections include archaeology, Egyptology, and zoology, as well as live specimens in the aquarium and vivarium. A visit to the Manchester Museum is not complete without getting a photo of Stan the T-Rex whose skeleton hangs from the ceiling on the ground floor.

Whitworth Art Gallery underwent a £15million transformation. It re-opened in 2014 and won the prestigious Art Fund Prize for Museum of the Year 2015. The art gallery's collection totals around 55,000 pieces including Fine and Modern Art, Textiles, Wallpaper and Sculptures.

Home at First Street is a new addition to the Southern Gateway formed from the merger of Corner House and The Library Theatre Company. There are five cinema screens showing the latest releases of independent and international films. There are also two theatres with traditional productions and showcasing new talent.

The Palace theatre attracts major west end productions such as Hairspray the Musical and The Bodyguard as well as performances from the English National Ballet.

The Southern Gateway is a hive for live music, with venues such as the Manchester Academy, Deaf Institute, Sound Control, The Ritz and Gorilla.

Bars include Revolution and Font. Or you could try a spot of Bowling at Dog Bowl on Whitworth Street West.

There are plenty of places to eat, such as Nandos and Zouk on Chester Street, further up on Oxford Street is Pizza Express. There are plenty of supermarkets and shops including STA travel which specialises in student travel.

More modern developments in the area include the Quadrangle, W3 and Locks Yard. If you prefer a property with original features there is a selection of conversions in the area such as Macintosh Mills which has exposed brickwork and wrought iron columns. Cambridge Mills is another notable conversion.

Due to the areas proximity to university campuses there are several private student halls in the Southern Gateway.

Getting About

Wilmslow Road is one of the busiest bus routes in Europe and there is a train station on Oxford Road at the junction with Oxford Street.

Education

The University of Manchester has its main campus on Oxford Road. The University is part of the Russell Group and is currently ranked 5th in the UK according to the 2015 Shanghai Jiao Tong Academic Ranking of World Universities. The campus includes around 30 listed buildings including the impressive stone building that fronts Oxford Road.

Notable former alumni include; Alan Turing, Martin Aimis, Benedict Cumberbatch and Rik Mayal along with 25 Nobel Prize winners. Professor Brian Cox, formally of 90’s pop band D:Ream and more recently known for his TV work including Stargazing Live is Professor of Particle Physics in the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Manchester.

Manchester Metropolitan University also has its main campus on Oxford Road, delivering under graduate and post grad courses. The university has faculties, research institutes and a range of departments, schools and professional support services. Notable former alumi include Steve Coogan and Julie Walters. The University recently built new student facilities including a new Student Union fronting onto Cambridge Street.

The Royal Northern College of Music is an exceptionally well respected school of music which attracts student’s world wide. They run a programme of events which are open to the public. Former alumni include John McCabe eminent composer and recipient of the 2014 Ivor Novello Music Award.

Parks and recreation

Whitworth Park is located by the side of Whitworth Art Gallery and has 18 acres of parkland.

Manchester Aquatic Centre was purpose built for the Commonwealth Games in 2002. There are two 50m pools and a children’s pool with slide. There are work out rooms, fitness studios and a health suite.
